Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip arthroplasty is an increasingly common procedure that is performed on a wide range of people. Gone are the days of reserving hip replacement surgery for a particular age group; hip implants are now offered to younger and more active patients, as well. No matter what age you are, you expect your joint pain to lessen if you undergo a hip replacement surgery, and you rightfully expect a better opportunity to stay active without the pain.

Unfortunately, many hip implants are being recalled because specific defective implant designs are causing patients increased pain and reduced mobility.

Stryker Hip Implant Recall

On July 6, 2012, Stryker Orthopaedics recalled two products: the Rejuvenate hip stem, and the ABG II modular-neck hip stem. These defective Stryker products cause symptoms so severe that patients may need a second surgery to remove and replace the hip implants. A “revision surgery” can be costly and dangerous. If you have been implanted with a recalled Stryker hip implant component, please contact us as soon as possible to discuss your legal options.

DePuy Hip Implant Recall

In August of 2010, DePuy issued a worldwide recall of its ASR hip replacement systems, specifically: the ASR XL Acetabular System, and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The ASR systems were recalled because of the rise of evidence that these two metal-on-metal implants have “higher-than-expected” early failure rates. The recalled DePuy implants may only last a few years after the implantation. There is also increasing evidence that DePuy knew of the high failure risks of the ASR systems long before issuing the worldwide recall.

Other Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants

A third of all hip replacement surgeries performed in our country use metal-on-metal hip implants. Metal hip implants have an earlier than average failure rate, can cause metal toxicity (metallosis), and may require a revision surgery to remove and replace the faulty metal implant.

Even if your metal hip implant has not been recalled, it is important to be aware of the risks associated with metal hip replacements and of the adverse symptoms that may arise.
